Though gold was found in North Dakota for a brief period, the state is not a substantial producer of gold and silver. North Dakota is now one of the leader producers of crude oil in the entire United States, and the booming economy has transformed the character of the state. Though still playing a huge role, mineral and raw material extraction, especially oil, has skyrocketed as of late. Until the 1970s, the economy of North Dakota was centered around agriculture. North Dakota, formerly part of Dakota Territory, was given statehood in 1889.
